Deferoxamine is a prescription medication used to remove excess iron from the body. Deferoxamine belongs to a group of drugs called iron chelators. These work by binding with excess iron so that it can be removed from the body.

This medication is available in an injectable form to be given directly into a vein (IV), muscle (IM), or under the skin (subcutaneously) by a healthcare professional.

Common side effects of deferoxamine include injection site pain, rash, and fever.

Deferoxamine can also cause dizziness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how deferoxamine affects you.
