Unsanitary Conditions Lead to Meat Recall

Meat recall due to unsanitary conditions expands

(RxWiki News) Consumers around the country might want to check the labels on meat in their fridge — a recall of certain products has grown this week.

Food safety officials recently expanded an earlier recall of meat products due to unsanitary conditions at the plant where they were produced.

The products include a variety of meat and poultry items produced by a Colorado company and sold in a number of states.

"Pay attention to expiration dates on food items."

According to the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), a recall of food items produced by Yauk's Specialty Meats out of Windsor, Colorado has been expanded.

"FSIS began a food safety assessment at the plant on December 5, 2013, and discovered that product was being produced under insanitary conditions, including rodent activity in the production, storage and retail areas of the property," FSIS reported.

The initial Yauk's recall began on December 9, and as the still ongoing investigation continued, FSIS decided to recall additional products. The recall was expanded once on December 12 to include more items, and yet again on December 16.

The latest recall expansion included “Corner Post Meats” brand hams and bacon and “Old Style Sausage” brand Smoked Andouille and Kielbasa Sausages. The products bear the establishment number "Est. 20309" on their labels, printed inside the USDA Mark of Inspection.

Products recalled on December 12 also have the establishment number “Est. 20309” or “P-20309” and included a number of brands, like Four Sisters Farm, Luc's Pizza, High Point Bison, Mountain States Poultry & Meats and Wyoming Pure Beef, among others.

The initial December 9 recall included “James Ranch” brand jerky and summer sausage and “Rocky Plains Meats” brand hams, bacon, raw and smoked sausage, jerky and raw poultry, plus several others.

The recalled meat and poultry items were produced between April 1, 2013 and December 5, 2013 at the Colorado plant. The products were sold to wholesale and retail outlets in Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.

FSIS did not report on the amount of meat and poultry that these recalls account for.

"FSIS has suspended the assignment of inspectors at the establishment, and the establishment currently is not operating," FSIS reported.

It is important to note that neither FSIS or Yauk's has received reports of illnesses related to eating these products. FSIS encouraged anyone concerned about illness to contact a health professional.

Any recalled foods should be discarded.
