Pepto-Bismol is an over the counter medication used to treat diarrhea, heartburn and upset stomach in adults and children 12 and older.. Pepto-Bismol belongs to a group of drugs called antidiarrheal agents. These work by decreasing the amount of fluid in the intestines, killing harmful bacteria and decreasing intestinal inflammation.

This medication comes in suspension, chewable tablets, and caplets and is taken every 1/2 hour to hour as needed. Adults should not exceed 8 doses and children 6 in 24 hours.

Common side effects of Pepto-Bismol include dark brown or black stools, constipation, and tongue discoloration.
