New Medicines of 2015

Genvoya

Copy: Genvoya is a prescription drug used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It comes as a single product containing four medications: elvitegravir, emtricitabine, tenofovir alafenamide and cobicistat. Elvitegravir belongs to a group of drugs called HIV integrase strand transfer inhibitors, or HIV-1 INSTIs. These drugs work by blocking an HIV enzyme called integrase, which can reduce the amount of HIV in the body. Emtricitabine and tenofovir belong to a group of drugs called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors. Together these drugs work to decrease the presence of HIV in the blood. Cobicistat belongs to a group of drugs called CYP3A inhibitors. Cobicistat helps keep the other medications in the body longer so that the treatment will have a greater effect. Genvoya is available in tablet form and is typically taken once a day. Common side effects include nausea and raised cholesterol. Genvoya provides another effective, once-daily treatment regimen for patients with HIV-1 infection.
