Making a difference

NBCAM gives survivors and healthcare providers the opportunity to spread the word about the steps women can take to detect breast cancer before it spreads. Both the ribbon and NBCAM have made quantitative differences in research and treatment since their start. Between 1991 and 1996, federal funding for breast cancer research increased nearly four-fold to over $550 million. The percentage of women getting annual mammograms and clinical breast exams more than doubled over that decade. The pin sold by Avon cosmetics in the 1990’s retailed at only $2, but raised $10 million for research and has inspired more products like this since. The death rate due to breast cancer has been declining since 1990 due to better screening, early detection, increased awareness and improved treatment options. From 1990 to 2010, breast cancer death rates decreased by 34 percent.
