Tips for a Healthy Thanksgiving Dinner
Stuffing can be both delicious and nutritious. Instead of overdosing on heavy bread, cornmeal, sausage or butter, consider filling out your dressing with some healthier alternatives. Onions, spinach, cranberries and lots of flavorful fruits and vegetables like apples, celery, parsley, and herbs can make for nutritious and delicious additions to stuffing. Try switching to a low-sodium chicken broth for extra moist stuffing that cuts down on salt without cutting down on flavor. You can even substitute wild rice or quinoa for the bread for fewer calories and carbohydrates. Finally, plan to cook your stuffing outside of the bird for a lower-fat and safer option. When you cook stuffing inside of the turkey, you run the risk of undercooking the dressing, which could lead to food poisoning.
